# Doconda vs python-docx

> python-docx is a free library for writing Word files in code; Doconda is an API that creates, reviews and edits Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF.

**Use python-docx** if you want to build Word files from Python paragraph by paragraph, for free, offline and with full
control of the code. **Use Doconda** if you want to ask for the finished document (from a sentence or from your
Markdown), get it reviewed and with its PDF, or change an existing Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF file in one call.

## Comparison

| | python-docx | Doconda |
| - | - | - |
| What it is | Python library for reading, creating and updating Word (.docx) files | API (with Python and TypeScript SDKs and an MCP server) that creates, reviews and edits documents |
| Create | You write the code for every heading, paragraph, table and image | From a sentence (`prompt`) or your Markdown (`content`), with the style described in plain text |
| Edit existing files | Yes: you open the .docx and change it in code | Yes: you describe the change ("add a confidentiality clause") and the rest stays the same |
| Review and repair | Not its goal | [Review](/en/guides/review) returns the same file fixed plus a report, without changing your text |
| PDF | Does not produce PDF | Every Word file comes with its PDF |
| Formats | .docx only | Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF (also accepts .doc, .ppt and .xls) |
| Templates needed | No; you start from an empty document or one of yours | No; you can pass a file to copy its design |
| Use from an AI agent | You have to wrap it in a tool yourself | Ready-made tools for function calling and an [MCP server](/en/agents/mcp) |
| Hosting | Runs on your machine, no network | Hosted service; documents stored in the EU (Ireland) |
| License and price | MIT, free | Pay per delivered document from a prepaid balance (for example, €0.05 for a Word file from your Markdown at `fast`); €5 free to start |

## When to choose python-docx

* You want a free, open source dependency with no accounts or API keys.
* Everything has to run offline or inside your own infrastructure.
* Your documents have a fixed structure and you prefer to control every element from code.
* You only need Word (.docx) and no PDF.

## When to choose Doconda

* You want the finished document without coding every paragraph: pass text or a sentence plus a style ("dark blue
headings, with a table of contents").
* You also need the PDF, or you work with PowerPoint, Excel and PDF as well as Word.
* You receive third-party files and want to [edit them](/en/guides/edit) with an instruction, or
[review them](/en/guides/review) and have the problems that cannot be fixed reported.
* An AI agent uses it: give it the tools over [MCP](/en/agents/mcp) or the SDK, with no layout code to maintain.

## Using them together

You can generate the rigid parts with python-docx (for example, an appendix whose structure you already control) and
then send the file to Doconda to [review it](/en/guides/review) and get its PDF, or to [edit it](/en/guides/edit) with an
instruction when someone asks for a change. The [Python SDK](/en/sdk/python) (`pip install doconda`) sits alongside
python-docx in the same project without issues.
