# Doconda Editor vs Univer

> Univer is an open-source SDK to build spreadsheets, documents and presentations on its own data model; opening and saving .xlsx needs Univer Pro and a conversion server. Doconda's editor plugin opens and saves .docx, .pptx, .xlsx and .pdf directly in the browser.

**Use Univer** if you want to build your own office suite inside your product, on its data model, and you need
real-time co-editing or deep low-level customization. **Use Doconda's editor plugin** if your users have to open, edit and
save real Office and PDF files (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .pdf) inside your React app without running any server: the file is
opened and saved in the browser.

## Comparison

| | Univer | Doconda editor plugin |
| - | - | - |
| What it is | Open-source SDK to build office apps (sheets, docs, slides) inside your product | React component (`@doconda/editor`) with ready-made Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF editors |
| Working format | Its own data model (JSON) | The files as they are: .docx, .pptx, .xlsx and .pdf |
| Opening and saving Office files | Importing and exporting .xlsx needs Univer Pro and a conversion service on a server; .docx is not among the import/export formats | Directly in the browser, no server; whatever the editor does not touch is saved as it was |
| PDF | Not an editing format | Fill in forms, sign, annotate, comment and organize pages |
| Server | Not needed to edit its model; needed to import and export Office files | None |
| React | Its UI is built with React (18 and 19) | React 19 or later |
| Collaboration | Real-time co-editing in Univer Pro | One person edits their copy and you decide where to save (`onSave`, `autosave`) |
| AI assistant | Built for agents: with Univer Platform spreadsheets are driven in natural language | Built into Word, Excel and PowerPoint: the user asks for changes in plain language, sees them made and accepts or discards them; no API keys, 2,000 edits a month on every plan |
| Licence | Apache-2.0 core; commercial Univer Pro (collaboration, import/export, printing, charts, pivot tables…) | Per organization: monthly, yearly or one-time, 7 days free; unlimited documents and users, up to 5 domains |

## When to choose Univer

* You want to build your own suite and work with a data model, not with files.
* You need real-time co-editing, pivot tables or server-side calculation (Univer Pro).
* An open-source base that you will adapt deeply suits you.

## When to choose Doconda

* Your users work with real Office and PDF files and expect to download the same .docx, .pptx, .xlsx or .pdf they
uploaded, with whatever they did not touch left intact.
* You don't want to run a conversion server: everything happens in the browser.
* You need Word and PowerPoint as well as Excel, and PDF too (fill in, sign, annotate).
* You want an editor that looks like part of your product: your colours, your toolbar and
  [your own buttons](/en/editor/customize#your-own-buttons).
* You want your users to edit the document with AI without you wiring up a model or them entering a key: the
  [assistant](/en/editor/customize#ai-assistant) is included.
* You already use the Doconda API so your agent creates the documents your users then edit.
