# What is a DOCX file

> DOCX is Microsoft Word's document format since 2007: a ZIP package of XML that follows the Office Open XML standard.

**DOCX** is Microsoft Word's default document format since Word 2007. It is a ZIP package that follows the
[Office Open XML](/en/glossary/ooxml) standard (WordprocessingML): the text is in `word/document.xml`, the styles in
`word/styles.xml`, and numbering, comments, images and headers in their own parts. Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs and
Pages, among others, open it.

## Why it matters when generating documents with AI

* A well-made DOCX keeps its look in [styles](/en/glossary/word-styles) (Normal, Heading 1…), so whoever receives it can
keep editing without breaking the design.
* Pagination is not stored in the file: the program that opens it computes it, and it depends on the fonts available.
* Features such as [tracked changes](/en/glossary/tracked-changes), [comments](/en/glossary/word-comments), automatic
numbering or a table of contents only exist if the XML declares them; they can't be faked with text.
* A DOCX with a single malformed part may not open, or open with an "unreadable content" warning.

## With Doconda

With `format: "docx"`, Doconda creates a Word document from a sentence, from your Markdown or from your files, and
delivers it with its PDF ([Create](/en/guides/create)). It also [edits](/en/guides/edit) an existing Word file, changing
only what you ask, and [reviews](/en/guides/review) it: tables wider than the page, orphaned headings or gaps in the
numbering.
