# What are Word comments

> A Word comment is a note anchored to a range of text, with an author and date, that is not part of the content.

A **Word comment** is a note anchored to a range of text, with its author and date, shown in the margin and not part of
the document's content. In the [DOCX](/en/glossary/docx) file, comment text is stored in its own part
(`word/comments.xml`) and the document marks where each one starts and ends. Comments can be replied to and resolved.

## Why it matters when generating documents with AI

* They let an AI flag doubts or suggestions without changing the text, leaving the decision to a person.
* Combined with [tracked changes](/en/glossary/tracked-changes), they separate what was changed from what is only
  suggested.
* A comment typed into the text ("\[NOTE: check this]") can slip into the final version; a real one stays out of the
  content.
* Forgotten comments travel with the file: check them before sending it.

## With Doconda

When [editing](/en/guides/edit) a Word document you can ask for comments to be added; it needs the `standard` or `best`
level. When [reviewing](/en/guides/review) a PDF, the `pdf.annotations` warning flags forgotten comments or review
marks.
