# How long it is kept

> Retention: 15 minutes, 1, 7, 30 or 90 days. Take the document to your own system before then.

Doconda is not your archive: it keeps each document only as long as you choose, from when it finishes. Then it deletes
its content: the files (Word, PDF, images), your request, the review report, the events and the `metadata`, and for an
artifact, its page and its data. Only what billing needs stays: status, format, type, pages and cost.

| `retention` | Kept for |
| - | - |
| `none` | 15 minutes |
| `1d` | 1 day |
| `7d` | 7 days |
| `30d` | 30 days (default) |
| `90d` | 90 days |

There is no "forever". To take each document as soon as it finishes, use [webhooks](/en/guides/webhooks).

## For a whole project

In the dashboard, **Organization → Projects → Kept for**. It is the retention of what is created from then on in that
project, and also of the files you upload with `POST /files`. What already exists keeps its own.

## For one document

```json theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
{
  "format": "docx",
  "content": { "markdown": "…" },
  "retention": "7d"
}
```

* It works in `POST /documents`. Without `retention`, the project's is used. [Reading a file](/en/guides/extract) keeps nothing.
* The document carries `retention` and `expires_at`: when its content will be deleted (set once it finishes).
* Once deleted, the document shows `content_deleted_at`, and `/report` and `/events` answer **410 `content_deleted`**.
* An artifact with `retention: "none"` can't keep shared data: it keeps it in each visitor's browser, and its page is
  delivered to download.
* If you need it gone sooner, delete it: `DELETE /documents/{id}`.
