Office Open XML (OOXML) is the Microsoft Office file format since Office 2007, standardized as ECMA-376 (2006) and ISO/IEC 29500 (2008). Each file is a ZIP package of XML parts and the relationships between them (Open Packaging Conventions). It defines three main vocabularies: WordprocessingML (.docx), SpreadsheetML (.xlsx) and PresentationML (.pptx), which share DrawingML for charts and shapes.

Why it matters when generating documents with AI

  • A valid OOXML file needs many parts that agree with each other (content, styles, numbering, relationships, content types); one mistake can make Word, Excel or PowerPoint refuse to open it or offer to repair it.
  • The standard is long (thousands of pages), and a language model writing the XML by hand can produce structures the standard does not allow.
  • What makes a document editable (styles, formulas, themes, placeholders) lives in the XML; an image or a PDF does not keep it.
  • An OOXML file can carry macros, embedded objects or links to external resources, so files from outside should be checked.

With Doconda

Doconda delivers truly editable .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files: text, tables, charts and formulas, not images, with the look in the document’s styles (Create). When it reviews a file, it rejects files with macros or XML declarations, removes anything that would load or run on its own, and lists it in the report.
