A Word comment is a note anchored to a range of text, with its author and date, shown in the margin and not part of the document’s content. In the DOCX file, comment text is stored in its own part (word/comments.xml) and the document marks where each one starts and ends. Comments can be replied to and resolved.

Why it matters when generating documents with AI

  • They let an AI flag doubts or suggestions without changing the text, leaving the decision to a person.
  • Combined with tracked changes, they separate what was changed from what is only suggested.
  • A comment typed into the text (“[NOTE: check this]”) can slip into the final version; a real one stays out of the content.
  • Forgotten comments travel with the file: check them before sending it.

With Doconda

When editing a Word document you can ask for comments to be added; it needs the standard or best level. When reviewing a PDF, the pdf.annotations warning flags forgotten comments or review marks.
