Tracked changes is the Word feature that records every edit to a document as a revision: insertions and deletions stay marked, with their author and date, until someone accepts or rejects them. In the DOCX file, revisions are stored as their own XML elements (w:ins, w:del), not as colored text.

Why it matters when generating documents with AI

  • Whoever receives a document edited by AI can see exactly what changed and decide change by change.
  • In contracts and legal documents, redlining with tracked changes is the usual way to negotiate a text.
  • Faking changes with colors or strikethrough doesn’t work: Word doesn’t recognize them as revisions and they can’t be accepted.
  • When reading a document with pending changes, you have to decide whether to use the text with changes accepted or the original.

With Doconda

When editing a Word document you can ask for tracked changes: each change is marked under the name “Doconda”. You can also ask for pending changes to be accepted. It needs the standard or best level. When reading a file, a Word document with tracked changes is converted with the changes accepted.
